800 tonne garbage cleared after strike ended: DMC to HC

NAINITAL: Dehradun municipal corporation (DMC) on Monday submitted in Uttarakhand high court that the civic body has disposed more than 800 tonne of garbage since the strike of sanitation workers ended.The HC on Friday directed the Dehradun civic body to file a report by May 21 explaining why garbage was not properly disposed of in the city.Jatin Sabarwal, a resident of Dehradun had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) on Friday stating that since the past 10 10 days heaps of garbage was lying at numerous locations across the city inviting infectious diseases and other related hazards.Ashish Joshi, counsel for the petitioner, said, “The municipal corporation has submitted its response about the work they have done in the direction of ensuring cleanliness including disposing off more than 800 tonne of garbage from the city.”The petitioner had alleged that despite complaining and contacting the municipal body, state pollution control board and other state government authorities, no action was taken.Earlier, on May 7, 2018, around 3,000 workers of the civic body had gone on strike demanding wages on par with state minimum wage and permanent jobs.
