Gunshots fired at forest patrol team, one held

Nainital: In yet another attack on state forest department employees, gunshots were fired at a patrolling team of the department on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday in Gaula range of Terai-East forest division in Kumaon. The vehicle did not stop despite many requests but fled and fired at least three gunshots. This is the ninth such attack on state forest department employees in a year.Ganesh Chandra Tripathi, range officer, Gaula range said, “It was around 2.15 am when the patrolling team headed by forester Lalit Mohan Joshi heard a vehicle and the team followed it. The team chased down and caught the person driving the vehicle. One person has been arrested and a case has been registered under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code.The attack took place around 2 am while the team tried to stop a vehicle carrying wooden logs chopped off from trees cut down illegally.

The vehicle was carrying wooden logs.”The accused has been identified as Pappu Karki, a resident of Kalyanpur in Gaulapar area of Haldwani and Police are looking for his accomplices.The most horrific attack took place in March last year when a beat watcher from the forest department was crushed under the wheels of a tractor when he tried to oppose those involved in illegal mining on the Kosi river bed.
