Sikhs protest against cops for removing religious flags from vehicles

When pilgrims ask the reason for removing the flags, police said it’s not allowed. The matter came to light when a video was posted in social media on June 18 in which Uttarakhand police officers can be seen removing flags from two-wheelers and four-wheelers of pilgrims. He also requested people to share his video to avoid fake news.Meanwhile in Rudrapur, Sikh community members marched from Gurdwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha to Maharaja Ranjeet Singh Park. The protesters warned of a state-level protest if action was not taken. DSP Chamoli, in another video, said that police didn’t dishonour ‘Nishan Sabih’.

Rudrapur: Members of the Sikh community in Rudrapur staged a protest and took out a march on Thursday against the alleged removal of religious flags by policemen from the vehicles of Sikh pilgrims visiting Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib situated in Chamoli district.The protesters demanded suspension of the policemen involved in the incident and also insisted that they should be permitted to carry flags as per their tradition. The matter came to light when a video was posted in social media on June 18 in which Uttarakhand police officers can be seen removing flags from two-wheelers and four-wheelers of pilgrims. Later, a video was also posted by Chamoli DSP Harbans Singh, who claimed that “only crooked and overtly tall flags were being removed so as to avert accidents.”The video also shows few youths arguing with police over the removal of flag. When pilgrims ask the reason for removing the flags, police said it’s not allowed. DSP Chamoli, in another video, said that police didn’t dishonour ‘Nishan Sabih’. He also requested people to share his video to avoid fake news.Meanwhile in Rudrapur, Sikh community members marched from Gurdwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha to Maharaja Ranjeet Singh Park. The protesters warned of a state-level protest if action was not taken. Later, they met district magistrate Neeraj Kharwal and submitted a memorandum.
