HARIDWAR: Professor D K Maheshwari took charge as Gurukul Kangri university vice-chancellor on Wednesday after Uttarakhand high court ordered the takeover on Tuesday.
The HC had directed outgoing vice-chancellor Surendra Kumar whose term expired on July 9 to hand over charge to the senior most professor in the university, D K Maheshwari.Meanwhile, the HC also lifted its ban on the appointment of teachers in the varsity.
The selection process was stayed midway by the high court in November after it was alleged that proper procedure was not adopted in the appointments. In April this year, Kumar had got a clean chit from the University Grants Commission in a forged degree case registered against him.
The university has now been allowed to open sealed envelopes in which all appointment-related documents were deposited with the court as per its direction in a writ petition which alleged that in the selections norms had been violated and corruption was indulged in.A few months ago the HC had banned appointments of teachers after interviews for most of the posts were completed.
