National Green Tribunal orders closure of 6 stone crushers for flouting norms in Nainital

NAINITAL: The National Green Tribunal ( NGT ) has ordered removal of six stone crushers in Haldwani, Lalkuan and Chorgaliya of Nainital district from populated areas for flouting norms.The NGT order came on July 12 while hearing a petition in which petitioners alleged that the stone crushing units should not operate in populated areas. The Committee has also given the basis of shortcomings of the concerning units. A petition filed by three residents of Nainital district on July 25, 2016 alleged that more than 500 stone crushers across the state are flouting norms and posing threat to soil, water as well as human beings.“According to the said recommendations, six units were found to be non-compliant. It has recommended that the said units may not be allowed for such a time till they take steps in concurrence with the recommendations made in the report,” the order said.Petitioners class that high amount of silica dust arising from these crushers and high noise badly affects the environment and public health in vicinity of these plants.
