Overflowing bins, stink from toilets keep Gandhi Park visitors at bay

Dehradun: Gandhi Park has remained the biggest hangout zone in the city with residents of all age groups visiting the area often. However, residents have complained that the civic authorities are doing nothing to keep the part clean.Residents said that the dustbins kept inside the park are always overflowing with garbage and there is hardly any water in the park’s toilets for the people to use.Pooja a frequent visitor to the park said, “The few dustbins that are kept in the park are always full. And garbage is also found lying on the ground. There is also no running water in the toilets. How is one supposed to use the washrooms then? The place is very unhygienic and a breeding ground of diseases and infections.”Another resident said that though the park is scenic, its poor infrastructure spoils the atmosphere. “The drinking water available at the park is also not clean. I have been visiting the park for the past 10 years and I have noticed that the park’s condition is worsening by the day.”Vinod a janitor said, “The dustbins are cleaned once every fortnight and the authorities doesn’t provide me with any acid, or phenyl to clean the toilets. Water is also not available throughout the day. I have to carry water from a tap 30 m away from the toilets as there is no water running in the toilets.”Neeraj Joshi additional municipal commissioner said that talks to renovate the toilets are on and the work will start soon. “Budget for the construction work would be allocated soon and work will be started.”
