Undertrial dies in Haldwani jail family alleges lsquotorturersquo by cops

Rudrapur: A 25-year-old Dalit man, arrested on charges of mobile loot, died in Haldwani prison under mysterious circumstances, as his family alleged that he succumbed to police “torture”. Sandeep was held by Rudrapur police on August 4 in connection with a mobile loot case . But we will inquire the case thoroughly to arrive at any conclusion,” the SHO said. “He told me that he was beaten badly by policemen at Rampura,” she said.When contacted, Rudrapur SHO said that Sandeep’s kin have filed a complaint on Friday.“The doctors at the hospital said that the deceased’s intestines were damaged. He was later produced before a court which sent him to jail on August 7.However, Sandeep's condition deteriorated in the prison on Thursday and he was rushed to Sushila Tiwari Hospital (STH) in Haldwani where he died on Thursday.The youth’s family alleged that Sandeep was beaten in police custody before being sent to jail, a charge refuted by police.Udham Singh Nagar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sadanand Date said that the accused was sent to jail only after the compulsory medical examination where he was pronounced fit.“Before shifting Sandeep to jail, all medical examinations were performed and he was absolutely fine.

However, we can get to the conclusion only after autopsy report is out,” the SSP said.According to the complaint filed by the deceased’s mother, Munni Devi, a resident of ward number 4 Dudhiya Nagar in the city, her son was detained by police on August 4.“A policeman took away my son on the morning of August 4, saying that he was summoned to Rampura police outpost by the in-charge for interrogation in connection with some loot case,” Munni Devi said.In her complaint to Rudrapur SHO Kailash Bhatt, Devi alleged that when her son was not released by the police, she went to Rampura outpost where policemen demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 to release Sandeep.“When I couldn’t pay them, the policemen booked my son and sent him to jail,” Devi said.Devi further said that when she went to meet her son in Haldwani prison on August 12, he was not well. “He told me that he was beaten badly by policemen at Rampura,” she said.When contacted, Rudrapur SHO said that Sandeep’s kin have filed a complaint on Friday.“The doctors at the hospital said that the deceased’s intestines were damaged. But we will inquire the case thoroughly to arrive at any conclusion,” the SHO said.
