Vajpayee’s ashes to be immersed at Har-ki-Pauri today

Haridwar: Hectic preparations were carried out on Saturday for the immersion of ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the Ganga at Har-ki-Pauri on Sunday. He directed the officials to complete the arrangements in time.Officials said that the procession bearing the former PM’s ashes will start from Shanti Kunj Ashram at 11 am and reach Har-ki-Pauri around 12.30 pm. Officials said that the ashes would be taken in a procession to the Har-ki-Pauri ghat where they would be immersed.Meanwhile, chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat reached Haridwar on Saturday and held a meeting with district administration officials regarding the preparations of the ceremony. Elaborate security arrangements were also being put into place for the ceremony in which an estimated 25,000 people are expected to be present including BJP president Amit Shah, Union home minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath among others. Entry of other pilgrims would be prohibited at the ghat during the immersion ceremony.Speaking to TOI about the arrangements being put in place, Haridwar senior superintendent of police Krishna Kumar VK said, “Since 25,000 people are expected to be present including several VIPs, extra police force, including four companies of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and 15 circle officers, would be deployed for the ceremony.”He added that movement of heavy vehicles has been restricted on NH-58 connecting Haridwar and Delhi from 6 am to 8 pm.
