6 people from Haryana held for human trafficking

Uttarkashi: Six residents of Haryana, including two women, were arrested by Uttarkashi police for alleged trafficking of a minor girl in Barkot. They been sent to jail and booked under sections 363 (kidnapping) and 370 (human trafficking) of the IPC.According to deputy superintendent of police, Ganesh Lal Kohli, “Residents of Kuthar village, Surbhi Lal, complained to police that six people from Haryana had taken a 14-year-old local girl, promising her guardians that they would get her married, on Thursday. The group was caught from Dobata in Barkot on Thursday night. The villagers complained to police after suspecting this to be a case of human trafficking.”Police teams conducted search operations and found the accused, all of whom were residents of Jind in Haryana, while they were trying to cross Dobata barrier.In December 2017, the Uttarakhand high court had observed that human trafficking in the state was ‘rampant’ and had asked police officers to invoke provisions of the Money Laundering Act, 2008 against those involved in human trafficking and also to attach their properties.The court had also recommended framing of laws based on the model law against trafficking in persons, as drafted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in relation to trafficking, victim and witness protection.
