Ensure sanitation workers are given oxygen cylinders shoes and gloves HC

Nainital: Taking cognizance of a letter written by safai karmacharis’ (sanitation workers ) stating their plight, the Uttarakhand high court (HC) on Tuesday asked the secretary of urban development, Uttarakhand, to ensure that the directions issued by the HC in March 16, 2017, are complied with in letter and spirit.In a letter dated September 8, 2018, Dehradun-based sanitation worker Bhupendra Kumar wrote that they are forced to enter manholes without necessary equipment such as oxygen cylinders, shoes and gloves.The division bench of acting Chief Justice Rajiv Sharma and justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari said, “The writ petition is disposed of with direction to the secretary, state urban development, to ensure that the directions issued earlier are complied with in letter and spirit.”The earlier direction stated that all the workers deployed for cleaning the streets and removal of garbage, including bio-degradable medical waste should be provided with necessary equipment, including proper uniforms with ID cards, shoes and gloves for winter and summer separately.
