Nainital: A little over a month of being closed to vehicular movement, the lower Mall Road in Nainital on Thursday was opened for two-wheelers and light vehicles. District administration officials said that more work will be done on the stretch to make it usable for bigger cars.Harveer Singh, additional district magistrate, Nainital told TOI, “The road has been repaired to be used for commuting by light vehicles and two-wheelers. The road came in existence between 1841-1885 during British rule in India. Some more work is still going on to make the stretch even better than earlier.”A sizeable stretch of the century-old road had crumbled on August 25 creating panic in the town. A few days later, another 8-feet long stretch had fallen into the Naini lake. With threat looming over the road, which was built in the middle of the 19th century by the British, residents of the town had last month launched a petition at Change.org urging chief minister of the state to save the lake.Geologists say that around 165 metre of the 1.5 km long road is vulnerable and needs to be bolstered.
