This time too, the fight is majorly between the two bigwigs — Congress and BJP.Congress candidate Nand Lal on Monday, while talking to TOI, outlined his party’s vision for the elections. Speaking about his priorities, Lal, an engineer, said that he would work for maintaining cleanliness, hygiene and adequate water supply. “Being an engineer, I would make the best use of my background to make the city a better place to live in. I would also take steps to ensure that traffic snarls are reduced.”Lal added that he would take concrete steps to solve the nazul land issue. “Over 80% of the city’s residents live on nazul land. Once voted to power, I would chalk out a solid nazul policy and solve the problem once and for all. Clean drinking water, sanitation, improved street lights will also be my priority.”He also spoke about the low-lying areas of the city that usually get waterlogged, toilets for men and women along the main roads and in market places. “I would stop dumping of waste into the Kalyani river and build a sewage treatment plant. The city generates around 25 metric tonne of garbage on a daily basis and if elected, I would pass the construction of a treatment plant.”He also promised to improve the condition of the city schools and colleges, and prevent spread of diseases such as dengue and malaria. “I would simplify the process of collecting water and house tax. The incumbent BJP mayor didn’t do any work for the city. The party has failed to fulfill its poll promises.”
