Uttarakhand HC asks lower court to hear Umesh Kumar’s bail plea

NAINITAL: Uttarakhand high court on Thursday directed the lower court of Dehradun to hear the bail application of Umesh Kumar, owner of Samachar Plus TV channel.Kumar, 45, who is presently lodged in jail in Dehradun, and two others were booked on charges of extortion, trespassing and criminal intimidation. Old cases lodged against Kumar have also been re-opened and are being investigated afresh.Gopal K Verma, counsel for the applicant, said, “The honorable court has directed the sessions court to hear Kumar’s bail application on November 16, 2018.”On November 2, 2018, the HC had stayed the arrest of Kumar’s associates — Praveen Sahni and Saurabh Sahni.In the last week of October, Kumar became the news when he was arrested in a top-secret operation by Uttarakhand Police from his sprawling bungalow at Ghaziabad on charges of instigating one of his employees to conduct a sting of chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and additional chief secretary Om Prakash, a bureaucrat considered close to the CM.Kumar’s motive, the state government alleged, was to create a political crisis in Uttarakhand.
