Uttarakhand governor drops ‘her excellency’ salutation, says uncomfortable with colonial legacy

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand governor Baby Rani Maurya has issued orders to not be addressed as ‘her excellency, the governor’, instead she will be addressed as ‘honourable governor’. Maurya issued the orders on Wednesday through secretary to the governor R K Sudhanshu. She succeeded Krishan Kant Paul, who served as governor of Uttarakhand from January 2015 to 25 August 2018. The governor told TOI that she was not comfortable with the “colonial legacy of salutation”.Maurya added, “We are working for common people so what’s the need for such titles. Maurya has previously served as mayor of Agra.

I prefer to work with simplicity.”In 2012, the then president Pranab Mukherjee had introduced a new set of protocols following which salutation ‘His Excellency’ was discontinued while organising functions within the country and during interaction between Indian dignitaries and the President.Maurya was sworn in as the seventh governor of Uttarakhand on August 26 this year. She succeeded Krishan Kant Paul, who served as governor of Uttarakhand from January 2015 to 25 August 2018. Maurya has previously served as mayor of Agra.
