Cong, BJP workers clash in Rudrapur, 3 detained

Rudrapur: While polling for the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) was peaceful in most places on Sunday, clashes between Congress and BJP workers were reported from Rudrapur’s Transit Camp following which three people were detained till 5pm.In ward number 8 of Transit Camp, BJP leader Shiv Gangwar was detained by police on charges of creating a ruckus at the polling booth. Kharwal has also announced re-polling in the three booths on Monday. Two others were also detained till 5 pm after BJP and Congress workers clashed at the same polling booth.Sources said that the incident took place after Gangwar allegedly tried to put pressure on election officials asking them to let people vote without the mandatory identity verifications.Meanwhile, in Kashipur’s ward no 31, polling was cancelled in three booths after it was found that the ballot papers for the councillor’s post had faulty election symbols.Taking action in the matter, district electoral officer Neeraj Kharwal suspended returning officer (RO), Gopal Singh Dhami.
