Dehradun: After few initial nail biting twists, Dehradun is set to get its third consecutive mayor from the BJP. The saffron camp erupted in cheers late on Tuesday evening as candidate Sunil Uniyal Gama continued to increase his lead over Congress’ Dinesh Agarwal. While the final results will be declared only after midnight or early on Wednesday, Gama was more than 13,700 votes ahead of Agarwal till around 10pm on Tuesday. Both Gama and Agarwal were neck-to-neck till the afternoon and at one point, Gama’s lead narrowed down to just 900 votes throwing Congress supporters into a cheerful glee. The happiness, however, was short lived as once the third round of counting began, Gama started soaring and continued to maintain the lead of at least 9,000 votes.Gama’s victory means that the city will have its third BJP mayor. Earlier, BJP’s Vinod Chamoli was the city mayor for two consecutive terms. The BJP supporters present at the counting station in Raipur said the city has delivered its mandate and Dehradun is all saffron now. “Our work for the past one decade has spoken and that’s why the residents have chosen us once again,” said Vineet Goyal.AAP’s Rajni Rawat who was considered a strong contender and had spent the highest amount on her campaign this year was nowhere on the counting charts.Interestingly, Congress performed much better at the councillor level and was marginally behind the incumbent BJP. According to latest results, of the 50 wards for which the results were declared, Congress won 23 seats while BJP had to settle for 24, three seats were won by Independents. The results of half of the wards are yet to be declared. In 2013, in a board of 60 wards, Congress had just 25 seats while BJP had 33 councillors. If the final results are on the lines of the trends, the DMC may have a BJP mayor but a Congress board. This will lead to considerable friction between the two arch-rivals. In the past, Congress has boycotted many board meeting alleging unfairness on the part of the mayor, however, if it comes to control the board many of the decisions by the mayor, like revising the tax rates, allotting tenders and other crucial decisions may be stalled. The results of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation also bucked the state-wide trend which had most of the councillors as independents. While in the state more than half of the councillors were independents, in DMC their numbers were limited to just three.
