Dehradun: Just 20 months after the BJP came to power with a thumping majority in Uttarakhand in 2017,several leaders who were its star campaigners failed to work their magic in the civic polls. Similar was the case with Congress too.CM Trivendra Rawat was left red-faced as his pick Nagina Devi was defeated by Congress nominee for the seat of chairperson of Doiwala palika parishad. The party could manage just seven ward seats, which was equivalent to the number won by independents and just one more than Congress. The win of Congress nominee Hemlata Negi, the wife of former minister Surendra Singh Negi, from Kotdwar, the bastion of forest minister Harak Singh Rawat, was another setback for the BJP and a blow to the prestige of the forest minister.Madan Kaushik, a senior minister with a strong vote base in Haridwar district, was also unable to work wonders for Annu Kakkad, who was defeated by Congress candidate Anita Sharma. The defeat has added to the worries of the BJP as Haridwar has Kaushik as its legislator and another party senior Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, a former chief minister, represents Haridwar Lok Sabha constituency. In Mussoorie, the BJP could not win a single seat even though the Musoorie MLA, Ganesh Joshi, is a heavyweight leader of the BJP.Even state BJP chief Ajay Bhatt could not help the party win at Ranikhet, a constituency he had won in 2002 and 2012, and had lost by a close margin in 2017.It was not just the BJP, but the Congress as well which had its share of embarrassment. Sumit Hridayesh, son of former minister and leader of opposition Indira Hridayesh, contested for mayoral seat of Haldwani nagar nigam against BJP sitting mayor Jogendra Rautela and lost. Indira is a three-time MLA from the constituency and is regarded as a political heavyweight of Uttarakhand. Sumit who received 53,939 votes was defeated by a margin of 19,854 votes.Commenting on how heavyweight leaders failed to get the plot in their own areas, analyst Udit Ghildiyal said, “Now the BJP and the Congress cannot take things for granted. In several seats, sitting MLAs could not help party candidates win. Voters are smart and they will not vote for names but for development.
