Youths want new mayor to fix Doon’s sewage issues, provide better public transport

Dehradun: After BJP’s Sunil Uniyal Gama was declared the new mayor of the city on Wednesday, the young and first-time voters of the state capital say they want the mayor to ensure a clean and green Dehradun.Manisha Pandey, a first-time voter who is pursuing post-graduation in Geography, said, “I am aware how politics over petty things affect the residents most. I want the new mayor to work in tandem with all the departments and ensure that funds are spent in a wise way. He should also ensure that the capital city is developed.”Echoing similar sentiments, Pooja, a student (who uses only her first name), said, “ I want the new mayor to make Dehradun a cleaner place. He should focus on sanitation and sewage problems first and then take care of the public transport system. A lot of diseases spread because of sanitation problems and the civic bodies should look into it first.”Kalpana Kumar, a first year BSc student, said that she wants the city’s mayor to make public transport safe for women. She said, “I am not from Dehradun and I stay with friends and travel alone most of the time. I am often scared to take the public transport alone so the new mayor’s priority should be to make the city’s buses safe for women. Also, a lot of tourists come to visit Dehradun so he should also focus on the city’s cleanliness and set up toilets at most market places.”Sahil Dahiya, another youngster, said that he wants better sewage system in the city. “Our city witnesses rainfall around the year and there is always waterlogging. It becomes difficult to walk and vehicles also get stuck. The new mayor should ask officials to address this issue on priority.”Meanwhile, mayor-elect Sunil Uniyal Gama told TOI that he would look into all the demands and try his best to deliver on the promises. “The youth population of the city has played a big role in my election and I will work on all their demands. My office is open to each and every person and they can also meet me and discuss their demands,” Gama said.
