Uttarakhand to seek Centre’s help in blocking ‘Kedarnath’ streaming in state

DEHRADUN: A day after the movie ‘Kedarnath’ was banned in Uttarakhand , the TS Rawat government is now planning to take up the issue with the Union information technology ministry and request them to not allow internet companies to stream the movie in the state citing law and order issues. Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj said that he will direct the Rudraprayag district magistrate, under whose jurisdiction Kedarnath falls, to issue a notice to the filmmakers for ‘misusing’ the name of God.The movie starring Sushant Rajput and Sara Ali Khan depicts a Hindu-Muslim love affair in the backdrop of deadly flash floods in 2013.Talking to TOI, Maharaj said, “I spoke to Rudraprayag district magistrate Mangesh Ghildiyal and directed him to issue a notice to the makers of ‘Kedarnath’ for using the name of God for a controversial story which is against the sentiments of the people of Uttarakhand.”“The notice will ask the filmmakers to ensure that the movie is not screened in the state even through social media. If the internet companies do not follow this, the filmmakers will be held accountable for any communal tension that arises out of it,” he added.The minister said, “We were misled by the filmmakers. We were earlier told that a movie is being made to show the calamity of 2013. It was only later that we came to know that the plot is the love story of an inter-faith couple. The different communities were shown fighting among themselves which is not the case in this peaceful state.”Maharaj also directed the tourism secretary to form a committee to prepare a set of guidelines for filmmakers interested in making movies in the Himalayan state.
