Now, cash prize for best teacher in government schools every month

DEHRADUN: In an attempt to motivate teachers to improve their performance, the state government is now planning to reward one best teacher each across four categories every month. They would then evaluate them based on the performance of their students and give them a score out of 50. “The judges, who will be principals and officials of the education department, will rank officials on a score out of 50. Teachers of junior and senior classes will be eligible for the award, according to a circular issued by the director general (school education) recently.Education director RK Kunwar told TOI that a best teacher would be selected from each category every month. If two teachers in the same category get similar marks, the one who has scored more in academic activities will be given preference.

The winner will be either given a cash prize of Rs 15,000 or they can choose a smartphone or tablet as their reward,” he added.According to a circular issued by Jyoti Yadav, director general (school education), heads of schools would classify teachers into four categories – classes 1 to 5, classes 6 to 8, classes 9 to 10 and classes 11 to 12. They would then evaluate them based on the performance of their students and give them a score out of 50. The various parameters for analysing students’ achievements include participation in extra-curricular activities and English speaking ability. The attendance of teachers would also be considered as a major criteria while giving the marks.The circular adds that only those teachers who don’t have any criminal cases or disciplinary proceedings against them would be eligible for the reward.According to sources, the scheme would be funded by the central government, which has allocated Rs 1 lakh for each category every year.
