Forest officials step up vigil in Chetrapal as leopard enters village

Nainital: Forest officials have stepped up patrolling in and around Chetrapal village in Bageshwar district after the villagers spotted a leopard in the area.According to sources, villagers spotted a leopard in the area on Monday and alerted the forest officials who rushed to the spot. Later, they scared the animal away into the forest by bursting crackers.Speaking to TOI, RK Singh, divisional forest officer of Bageshwar, said, “We have cautioned the villagers to not venture into the nearby forests. We are also conducting extensive patrolling in the region to avoid any kind of human-animal conflict.”Meanwhile, the locals have demanded that cages be installed to capture the leopard. After an extensive search operation, they located the big cat hiding in the bushes. Hemant Punetha, a local, said, “The forest officials should install cages and rescue the big cat as there are chances of the animal trying to venture into the village again and again.Of late, Bageshwar district has become a hotbed of human-animal conflict with leopards especially being spotted in villages with increasing frequency.
