Hooch tragedy: HC asks state to submit reply within 10 days

Nainital: Uttarakhand high court (HC) on Wednesday, while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) regarding the hooch tragedy that has claimed the lives of more than 100 people in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, directed the state government to submit a report on the matter within 10 days.The PIL was filed by Pramod Sharma, a resident of Haridwar requesting the court to hand over the investigation to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The petitioner also requested the court to order suspension of officers responsible for the tragedy, as well as filing of FIRs against them.The division bench of chief justice Ramesh Ranganathan and justice RC Khulbe also asked the state government if any action has been taken against any officer who was responsible to keep vigil on the trade of illicit liquor.Pardeep Joshi, standing counsel for the state government, said, “We will be submitting our replies within the stipulated time period as directed by the honourable court.”TOI had earlier reported that despite a ban on the sale and consumption of liquor, it was being sold unabated in the holy town, even in places like Har-ki-Pauri.
