HARIDWAR/DEHRADUN: The mortal remains of Major Chitresh Bisht, who was killed in an IED blast near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu & Kashmir on Saturday, were consigned to flames with full state honours in Haridwar on Monday. The late Army officer's cousin lit the pyre amid chants of Vande Mataram in Haridwar's Kharakhari cremation ground.Nearly 2,500 people, including chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat , bid an emotional adieu to the martyr in Dehradun.Emotions ran high among the crowd which gathered in front of the slain major's house in Nehru Colony in Dehradun when the coffin wrapped in the tricolour reached his home on Monday morning from the military hospital. The crowd shouted anti-Pakistan slogans as well as cries like 'Major Bisht amar rahe' and 'Bharat Mata ki jai' as they mourned the loss of Major Bisht.Remembering Major Bisht during the assembly proceedings on Monday, BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi said, "Major Chitresh Bisht and my daughter studied from Class V to Class XII together in St Jospesh's Academy. He had told me that I danced well and had invited me to dance during his marriage procession scheduled for March 7."Major Chitresh's father, SS Bisht, a retired police inspector, said in a choked voice, "He was always in a hurry, and now he has left us hurriedly."Several other senior state BJP leaders, including Uttarakhand BJP chief Ajay Bhatt, and Pradesh Congress Committee president Pritam Singh, were also present at the funeral. Former minister Mantri Prasad Naithani and MLAs, including Deshraj Karnawal, Suresh Rathore, Mamata Rakesh and Khajan Das, were also present.Major Chitresh Bisht was to come home on February 28 for his marriage, scheduled for March 7. According to family members, the preparations were in full swing for the marriage but the news plunged everyone in gloom.
