Udham Singh Nagar home to 395 malnourished children

We are trying nook and cranny to bring malnourished children to the aanganwadi centres to provide them supplement food every month. Rudrapur: Three years following the launch of the ambitious Mission Poshan Aarohan (MPA) scheme to check malnutrition among children in the district, nearly 39.5% children still suffer from malnutrition in Udham Singh Nagar including 10.6% severely malnourished children, according to a survey report by National Family and Health Survey.As per the report, 7648 children in the district were found to be suffering from malnutrition out of over 20,000 children surveyed. Around 285 district officials were encouraged to adopt centres where these malnourished children were enrolled and ensure in person that they were properly fed under the scheme. "Poverty is a major factor behind malnutrition among children and the large size of families also contributes to the issue. Lack of adequate information on nutritional needs has been identified as a major factor for the prevailing nutritional crisis.

Experts also believe poor financial condition to be a major reason behind malnutrition."Poverty is a major factor behind malnutrition among children and the large size of families also contributes to the issue. We are trying nook and cranny to bring malnourished children to the aanganwadi centres to provide them supplement food every month. We are the only district in the state which was awarded on March 8 by the Union government for exemplary work in eradicating malnutrition", said Akhilesh Mishra, District Programme Officer.The MPA scheme, which started in January, 2016, aimed to provide nutrition to over 5,000 kids enrolled at 177 Anganwadi centres in the district. Around 285 district officials were encouraged to adopt centres where these malnourished children were enrolled and ensure in person that they were properly fed under the scheme. The administration also roped in a few companies from Pantnagar industrial area to fund the programme as part of their corporate social responsibility.According to a Food and Nutrition Board report, malnutrition in India continues to be at a high level with 42.5% children being underweight and almost 70% being anaemic. About 22% children are born with underweight."To create nutritional awareness, particularly among mothers, meetings and seminars are being organized. We are making all attempts to fight the crisis," said Avinash Khanna, the deputy chief medical officer of the district.
