Nainital: Two men were arrested on Sunday allegedly for attempting to slaughter two calves in Banbhulpura area of the city. The Haldwani police has recovered the progenies and the tools allegedly used to slaughter them.The two accused have been identified as Mohammad Nazim (24) and Abdul Rehman (28), both residents of Banbhulpura.“Both have been booked under sections of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and Uttarakhand Protection of Cow Progeny Act, 2007. The investigation in the matter is underway,” said Sunil Kumar Meena, senior superintendent of police, Nainital district.Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand Gau Seva Ayog is planning to launch a helpline number on the lines of emergency number 100 to enable people directly alert the state government agencies of any crime related to slaughter of cows.In August 2018, the Uttarakhand high court (HC) had invoked the ‘parens patriae’ clause (becoming a legal protector) for “the welfare of cows and other stray cattle in Uttarakhand.”By invoking this provision, the court had declared itself as the legal guardian of bovines across the state.
