U’khand hooch tragedy case: HC orders cops to provide security to petitioner

Nainital: The Uttarakhand high court (HC) on Wednesday told the Haridwar district administration to provide security to a petitioner after he allegedly received death threats for filing a plea, seeking the transfer of the hooch tragedy case to the CBI.The matter was heard by a division bench of justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and RC Khulbe.The PIL was filed by Pramod Sharma, a resident of Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district. Sharma informed the court that he was approached by few ‘unidentified people’ who told him to withdraw the plea and threatened him with dire consequences if he didn’t. After this, Sharma filed an FIR against them.“Last week, some people approached me while I was travelling to Kashipur. They asked me to withdraw the PIL. Then they threatened me with dire consequences if I did not heed to their demands,” said Sharma. In his petition, Sharma had also requested the court to suspend the responsible officers for failing to take action against hooch traders.Earlier, reports surfaced that despite that ban on sale and consumption of liquor in Haridwar, alcohol was being sold unabated in the holy town. Notably, some traders had also allegedly started home delivery of liquor.
