Gurukul varsity students threaten to intensify stir

  • | Thursday | 14th March, 2019

Haridwar: Agitating students of Gurukul Kangri University threatened the administration on Thursday that they will intensify their protest unless their demands are met soon. During a meeting held in Delhi on March 13, the BoM had approved the decisions taken at the university’s emergency meeting. The protest had started on Monday because the students were annoyed with the university’s decision to dissolve the students welfare association (SWA) following an alleged misbehaviour with the vice-chancellor by a group of students on March 9. TOI tried to take the university’s version on the issue, but nobody from the administration was available for comments. In case the university fails to fulfill the demands, the protest, currently going on outside the university administrative building, will turn into relay fast and then into indefinite fast by students, he added.

Haridwar: Agitating students of Gurukul Kangri University threatened the administration on Thursday that they will intensify their protest unless their demands are met soon. The protest had started on Monday because the students were annoyed with the university’s decision to dissolve the students welfare association (SWA) following an alleged misbehaviour with the vice-chancellor by a group of students on March 9. At an emergency meeting held on March 11, the university decided to dissolve the SWA and take action against the students involved in the incident.Vice-chancellor of the university, Vinod Kumar Sharma had reported the matter to the university’s board of management (BoM), the highest administrative body of the university. During a meeting held in Delhi on March 13, the BoM had approved the decisions taken at the university’s emergency meeting. The students however were irked by the decision. They issued a warning to the administration to withdraw their decision or else, the agitation will be intensified, they alleged.Former president of SWA, Manish Chauhan told TOI, “Most of the demands in the charter submitted to registrar Dinesh Chandra Bhatt on March 8 were accepted by the administration about a year ago when Sharma, the present VC, was the university registrar. After his appointment as the vice-chancellor a few months back, Sharma reneged on his promise of fulfilling the demands.” This, Chauhan alleged, irritated the students who gave the registrar a new charter of demands.“The charter of demands includes 7% reservation in university’s post-graduate admission for its graduates, construction of new hostels, bus facility for BTech students, reduction of hostel’s annual fee, investigation into decreasing number of research scholars, adequate books in library and smart classes,” SWA president Rahul Sharma said. In case the university fails to fulfill the demands, the protest, currently going on outside the university administrative building, will turn into relay fast and then into indefinite fast by students, he added. TOI tried to take the university’s version on the issue, but nobody from the administration was available for comments.
