EC seizes 37,000 firearms, 18,000 litre liquor

Dehradun: Around 37,000 firearms and 18,000 litre liquor have been seized from across the state by the election commission (EC) in the first two weeks of the implementation of the model code of conduct, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.According to the data provided by EC, a total of 36,831 of the seized firearms were licensed. The poll body has taken custody of these arms and will return them to their owners post elections.Speaking to TOI, chief electoral officer, Saujanya Jawalkar said that the EC has also filed over 500 FIRs regarding poll malpractices in the past two weeks. Ramchandra Rajguru, SP Pithoragarh, told TOI that Lal Nath, the driver of the vehicle, has claimed that the money was given to him by a shopkeeper at Paleta to deliver to Haldwani.In the second incident, police seized Rs 3.8 lakh from a private car, while checking vehicles at Seraghat barrier. The owner of the car, Sachin Patni, a Pithoragarh resident, alleged that he is a businessman and the money is his, but failed to produce any documents to validate his claim.Notably, in view of the upcoming polls, authorities are asking anyone traveling with over Rs 50,000 in cash to show bank pass book, PAN card, business transaction papers, or any such proof in a bid to check poll malpractices. “The commission has maintained a tight vigil on the flow of cash, liquor, firearms as well as all other materials which are used to entice voters,” she said.The EC data further adds that around 46,000 cases of property defacement have also been reported, most of these being public properties (27,358) post the nforcement of the model code of conduct.Some other such cases that the commission has taken notice of include, printing symbol of a political party on marriage cards, publicizing a political party by posting songs on social media platforms, among others.Meanwhile, Pithoragarh police seized around Rs 9 lakh, on Tuesday, from Salmora and Seraghat villages in Pithoragarh district.In the first incident, police strategic surveillance team, while checking vehicles at Salmora barrier, found Rs 5 lakh kept on the dashboard of a cantor.
