Modi and Nehru sincere in providing equality to people: Guha

Nainital: Renowned author and historian Ramchandra Guha on Tuesday said that both Narendra Modi and Jawaharlal Nehru are ‘sincere’ when it comes to providing equality to the people.Guha made the remarks while delivering a lecture on ‘India’s Road to Equality’ at Uttarakhand high court bar association in Nainital.“It is fair to say that both Nehru and Modi are pretty much sincere in providing equality to the people. But the responsibility should go beyond the realm of prime ministers. It should percolate into our daily lives,” said Guha, while answering a question about comparisons between Nehru and Modi.Commenting on the upcoming elections, Guha said, “It is the exercise of its kind in which every person’s vote has equal value despite his societal position.”Speaking about progress made by the Dalit community, Guha said, “Dalits have made far more progress as far as equality before god is concerned.Shekhar Pathak, a Padma awardee and historian from Nainital, who was present at the lecture, urged the bar members to raise the issue of Dalit oppression and gender equality in actual practice.Pathak also pointed out that Uttarakhand has not progressed in terms of bridging inequality, as it should have done in the last 18 years.The lecture was attended by high court justices Manoj Tiwari, Lokpal Singh and Sharad Sharma.
