Haridwar: Health department officials have detected 1,701 Covid-19 cases in the past five days at the ongoing Kumbh Mela in Haridwar. These include reports of both RT-PCR tests and Rapid Antigen tests used to detect the viral disease.

The Haridwar Kumbh Mela, which is being attended by lakhs of people every day, is being held at a time when India is battered by a rapidly spreading second wave of Covid-19. For more than one week now, India has been reporting over 1 lakh daily cases. On Thursday, the country reported 2,00,739 Covid-19 cases. According to a report by news agency PTI, the 1,701 Covid-19 cases at the Kumbh Mela were detected between April 10 and 14. The cases include commoners and seers of different akharas (ascetic groups).

Haridwar Chief Medical Officer Shambhu Kumar Jha said more RT-PCR test reports are awaited and the trend shows that the number of infected persons in the Kumbh Mela Kshetra is likely to climb to 2,000.

The Kumbh Mela area is spread over 670 hectares covering parts of Haridwar, Tehri Garhwal and Dehradun districts of Uttarakhand.

A majority of the 48.51 lakh people who took part in the last two royal baths (Shahi Snan) held on April 12 and April 14 were seen openly violating Covid-19 protocol like wearing of facemasks and maintaining social distancing.

"As seers were averse to undergoing RT-PCR tests till the Mesh Sankranti Shahi Snan of April 14, both testing and inoculation in the Kumbh Kshetra including the areas allocated to the akharas are likely to be stepped up in the coming days," PTI quoted Jha as saying.
