Dehradun: The district and sessions judge of Bageshwar on Wednesday sentenced a couple to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping and raping a 15-year-old girl in November last year. The convicts, identified as Sumit Arya and Raveena Arya, lured the victim with drugs and started physically exploiting her. Another man, Salman Ahmed, was sentenced to five years in jail under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 366A (forcing illicit intercourse). The court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on Sumit, Rs 25,000 on Raveena, and Rs 5,000 on Ahmed. A complaint filed by the victims father stated that the three convicts made his daughter addicted to drugs and then physically abused her. After registering an FIR on November 11, 2022, police rescued the girl the next day and arrested Sumit and Ahmed within a week.The victim told the court that she was raped by different people at several places after being blackmailed by three persons in the past three months. The prosecution also presented a record of monetary transactions extorted from the girl. Meanwhile, a scientific forensic lab report also confirmed that the DNA sample collected from the victims clothes matched Sumits samples.After reviewing evidence and hearing statements of witnesses, the court convicted Sumit under IPC section 366 A. He was also convicted under relevant sections of the Pocso Act along with his wife Raveena. Ahmed and Raveena were out on bail, but the court ordered their arrest and sent them to jail.
