Dehradun: Post-graduate doctors with the health department of Uttarakhand said theyre working under unsatisfactory conditions due to disparity in salaries. They told TOI the salary of specialists varies from Rs 90,000 to Rs 4 lakh a month under the You quote, We pay scheme where doctors quote salaries of their choice and get paid accordingly. However, doctors selected by the state commission, who also do VIP duties, postmortems and extra work of the department get less salary. This disparity needs to be corrected to retain specialists, else absence from work or resignations will continue, said a senior doctor of the health department. Incidentally, specialists of medical colleges deployed in hill districts get 50% higher salaries than doctors appointed through the state commission and this adds to the disparity, according to them. TOI has learnt that in Haridwar, doctors as young as 40 years get paid over Rs 3.7 lakh a month under the same scheme.General secretary of Provincial Medical Health Services, Dr Manoj Verma said, Experts deployed in hills should get 50% more compared to their current salaries. Specialists are recruited only after the chief medical officer raises a request. In Haridwar, the salary is higher because the district bears maximum population burden, therefore, patient load, said Dr R Rajesh Kumar, secretary, health department, Uttarakhand.
