Rudrapur: A growing concern has surfaced in Rudrapur, where residents are leaving behind cattle theyve raised for years, allowing them to roam freely. This abandonment has not only resulted in accidents but has also inflicted substantial damage to crops in the nearby villages.The problem is that when milch cows cease to produce milk and bulls are no longer required for farming, people simply abandon them. The Bovine Act restricts the buying and selling of these animals, and the shift towards mechanized farming has rendered oxen obsolete in agriculture. Consequently, these abandoned animals have become a source of trouble for the community.Ajay Bisht, a Haldwani resident, said, "Vehicles frequently collide with animals as they try to avoid road hazards, putting lives at risk." Farmers in the area are also grappling with the consequences. Dr SB Pandey, the chief veterinary officer of the district, said, "Plans are underway to construct cowsheds in five blocks of the district. Once these sheds are operational, all abandoned animals will be relocated there."Naresh Durgapal, commissioner of the municipal corporation, said, "A fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed on offenders. Animals must be tethered for safety, and the installation of radium strips, a preventive measure already adopted in other corporation areas, might be considered."
