Govt releases Rs 450 crore for road repairs

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand government on Tuesday released Rs 450 crores for a two-month drive to repair damaged roads across the state following heavy rains.This comes after a crucial meeting held earlier this week in which November 30 was set as the deadline to complete patchwork of damaged roads in the state. All the district magistrates have been directed to run a special campaign from October 1 to November 30 to complete the repair work on time.In a review meeting, additional chief secretary Radha Raturi said that two months time period has been given to the authorities to ensure pothole-free roads. During this period, the departmental seniors need to keep an eye on the work done and also ensure that quality work is done, she said. Meanwhile, a provision of Rs 300 crore has been kept for setting up crash barriers in the hill areas and the DMs have been directed to submit their proposals at the earliest. The Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) chairman assured that timely and quality repair work will be done, but the weather has been a hindrance. The road repair work had been delayed previously, leading to a complaint to the Punjab State Human Rights Commission. Meanwhile, roads in Salt Lake, Kolkata, are also in poor condition due to continuous rain, causing inconvenience to motorists.Newly laid and damaged roads in Trichy city to be repairedThe Trichy Corporation has pledged to strengthen new roads in the peripheral wards of the city that have been damaged by recent rainfall. The damage is suspected to be caused by seepage from drinking water pipelines. The corporation plans to carry out temporary strengthening work before the northeast monsoon begins. Residents have pointed out specific areas that have been affected, and the engineering department has been instructed to strengthen the damaged residential roads. The local body has also intensified road relaying works in the city.
