HARIDWAR: Sixty per cent of a new broad gauge railway line between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag has been completed, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) officials said on Tuesday. The officials hope to complete the project by the end of 2025."The project was aimed for completion by 2024. However, the work has been delayed due to Covid," said Om Prakash Malgudi, the projects deputy general manager. "A high court ban on mechanised mining has considerably hindered the supply of aggregates, which has added to the difficulty," he added. "With an impressive daily excavation rate of 170 metres for a tunnel, work on the project is going at a fast pace. The excavation work started in 2019, and so far, 127 kilometres of tunnels, out of the total planned 213 kilometres, have been completed. This extensive network includes the main tunnel, adit (approach) tunnel, escape tunnel, and cross-passage tunnel," chief project manager Ajit Singh added. All these tunnels will be rendered waterproof to ensure that inclement weather, particularly heavy rains, does not disrupt rail traffic. They will also be fortified to withstand any seismic activity," he added. To dig the tunnels, a tunnel boring machine and the drill and blast method were used so that no harm was done to residential areas.
