749 Hindu kids enrolled in 30 Uttarakhand madrassas: Report

DEHRADUN: Taking cognisance of a report of Uttarakhand madrassa education board, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) issued a notice to the principal secretary of the minority welfare department and directed him to appear personally before the commission on November 9.Of the total 7,339 students enrolled in 30 board-affiliated madrassas, 749 are Hindu children, as per the report.NCPCR has now asked minority welfare department to explain "why these children are not enrolled in schools under the Right to Education Act as madrassas do not fall within the definition of school under the Act."In its report, the state madrassa board said all students are being taught the NCERT syllabus. "About 131 Hindu children are studying in Khedi Shikohpur, followed by 112 in Tilakpur and 85 in Bhagwanpur of Haridwar district... All these children are receiving education in madrassas with their parents consent," the report added.NCPCR chairman Priyank Kanungo on October 17 directed the board director to "provide details of all government-aided seminaries where Hindu children are enrolled".
