Virasat Fest: Garhwal’s folk dance mesmerises audiences

Dehradun: The 11th day of the ongoing Virasat cultural festival witnessed a spectacular presentation of the renowned Garhwali folk dance, Ramman, recognised by Unesco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. A troupe of 27 artists from Joshimath and Chamoli brought this religious festival of Garhwal to the stage. The festival which starts from Vaisakhi and lasts for at least 15 days reveres the guardian god, Bhumiyal Devta.Artists cover their faces with wooden masks made of Bhojpatra wood.The dance performance is based on the Mahabharata and Krishna-Radhika Leela, among other folklore.The second performance of the evening was Goff Talgadi, a traditional folk dance of Goa, presented by the Indreshvar Yuva Club. This dance, traditionally performed during the Shigmo festival, celebrates the bountiful harvest in Phalgun month of the Vedic calendar.Namrata Shah and her group of 14 artists captivated the audience with a Kathak performance. The final performance was a Hindustani Shastri rendition played by renowned artist Aarti Ankalikar. The Virasat Fest serves as a space for people to learn about the rich art and culture of different places across the country.
