Prez: Edu institutes must produce grads for tech-driven world

RUDRAPUR: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday said that educational institutions should produce industry-ready graduates who can create employment and compete in the technology-driven world. She was speaking at the 35th convocation of Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Pantnagar during which she conferred degrees upon 1,041 students.The ceremony was also attended by Uttarakhand governor Lt General (Retd) Gurmeet Singh, union minister Ajay Bhatt and state agriculture minister Ganesh Joshi.Murmu arrived at the Pantnagar airport and proceeded to the convocation ceremony amid tight security. At the ceremony, the President praised the remarkable progress of women in todays world, noting that the number of female medal recipients in the convocation was high and it underscored the advancing role of women in various fields. The President said that Pant University was established to promote agricultural education and the development of the agricultural sector. "Since inception, it has been a centre of excellence for agricultural education, research and growth," she said. "Nobel Laureate Dr Norman Borlaug had termed Pant University as the harbinger of Green Revolution. Mexican wheat varieties developed by Borlaug were tested here. The university has played an effective role in the success of the revolution. Everyone associated with the agriculture sector knows about the Pantnagar seeds which increase crop quality and yield. The university will continue to play a leading role in the development of the agricultural sector". The President acknowledged the universitys contribution, both, at national and international levels and said that it was recognised as a pioneer in agricultural research and development."The university has played the role of a laboratory and contributed to crop quality and yield improvement. It has developed 346 improved varieties of crops, fruits, vegetables and two livestock breeds and contributed to 7 out of the 21 improved pulse varieties recently developed in the country," Murmu said. She underscored the importance of disseminating agricultural research to farmers, a practice Pant University has upheld for six decades.Recognizing the global shift towards natural and organic farming to address issues like climate change, the President said Uttarakhand has been a leader in production of millets and noted that 2023 is being commemorated as the International Year of Millets.The universitys pursuit of modern technology, particularly in digital solutions and AI is laudable, she said, adding that the development of an agricultural drone by the institution capable of spraying vast areas in minutes was a promising advancement for farmers. The President said educational institutions should produce industry-ready graduates who can create employment and compete in the technology-driven world. The Uttarakhand governor, in his address at the convocation, said, "The Pant University has played a vital role in ushering in the green revolution in our country. The graduates receiving their degrees today will be instrumental in furthering the prosperity of our nation."At the convocation, 1,041 students were conferred degrees, of which 626 were undergraduates, 310 postgraduates, and 105 PhD graduates. Eleven students were awarded vice-chancellor gold medals, 11 received silver medals, and 10 secured bronze medals for their performance. The ceremony also recognized five exceptional students with awards in various fields and two students received the prestigious Bharat Ratna Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant Award.
