DEHRADUN: Amending its previous order related to the PIL demanding the appointment of Lokayukta, the high court on Tuesday ordered the release of salaries of the employees working in the Lokayukta office. Their salary was withheld for the last four months. Further, the court allowed the maintenance bills and other expenses of the office to be paid till the start of the next financial year, after the chief standing counsel told the court that the process of appointment of the Lokayukta was underway.Presently 26 employees are working in the office of Lokayukta.During the hearing of the case on Tuesday, the government sought permission to release the salaries saying that festivals are around the corner and the employees working in the Lokayukta office have not been paid a single penny for four months. The government further said that the ban on bill payment imposed by the court should be withdrawn as the office is to be shifted.During the last hearing of the case in August, the court had given the government a last chance of three months to appoint the Lokayukta. The court had also said that the employees can be paid salaries from their parent department, but not from the account of the Lokayukta office.Petitioner Ravi Shankar Joshi has said that despite spending Rs 2 crore on the Lokayukta office every year, the government has not yet appointed any Lokayukta. He has demanded an order to appoint the Lokayukta to the government, because the cases related to corruption in which the government officials are involved can be taken up before the Lokayukta.
