Protests against liquor vends continue unabated in state

A local resident, Savita Devi, said that a liquor shop was opened near DAV College and that there is also a temple nearby. Meena Devi, head of Mahila Mangal Dal, said the liquor shop was opened on a lane and was located near a primary school, post office and bank. Head of the organization, Sateshwari Devi, said they would keep protesting till the authorities announce total liquor ban.In Tehri, women blocked the road at Lambgaon for two hours. She said they would continue with their protest unless the excise department shifts the liquor vend elsewhere.There were also reports of protests by women from Gangotri-Yamunotri-Kedarnath highway in Rudraprayag and in Ramnagar's Bhawani Ganj. The protesting women are demanding that not a single liquor shop be opened within 20 km radius of Lambgaon.In Jakhanidhar block of Tehi, women came our onto the streets and held a rally against opening of liquor shops.

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government, though, has converted 64 state highways to district roads to save liquor outlets from closing down following the Supreme Court's order banning sale of liquor within 500 m of national and state highways, protests by women against such establishments opening again continued unabated across the state, including in Kotdwar, Tehri, Kedar valley and Dehradun.In Silogi bazaar of Dwarlikhal in Kotdwar, women prevented a liquor shop from opening by locking it's shutters. Seeing the large number of angry protesters, the shop owner and staff ran away. Representatives of 25 villages also reached the spot to extend support to these women. Meena Devi, head of Mahila Mangal Dal, said the liquor shop was opened on a lane and was located near a primary school, post office and bank. She warned the district administration and excise officials to cancel the location of the liquor shop or they would dismantle it themselves.Panchgai liquor opposing organization too came in support of the agitating women at Ukhimath in Kedar valley.
