In hush-hush meeting, Kovind seeks support of Uttarakhand BJP MPs, MLAs

DEHRADUN: Ram Nath Kovind , the NDA presidential nominee, on Monday held a meeting with BJP MLAs and MPs at the residence of Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and sought their support for the presidential election taking place on July 17.In a hush-hush meeting — chaired by Rawat and attended by all 57 BJP legislators and two of the five BJP MPs from the state as well as independent MLA Pritam Singh Panwar — Kovind sought their votes, including that of another independent MLA, Ram Singh Kaira. If elected, Kovind will be the second Dalit President of the country after K R Narayanan.BJP MPs and former chief ministers Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, however, were not present at the meeting due to personal engagements, they said.BJP national general secretary Anil Baluni, who is accompanying Kovind to Dehradun, said, "At the meeting, Kovind expressed his deep emotional connection with Uttarakhand due to the Ganga, Yamuna, Badrinath and Kedarnath. I have spent the whole day with him, and I am surprised at his knowledge of Uttarakhand," added Baluni.Earlier in the day, Kovind, accompanied by Baluni, was received by CM Rawat and BJP state president Ajay Bhatt at Jolly Grant airport, and after a brief welcome ceremony at Doiwala, they drove to the CM's residence.Kovind, who had on Sunday embarked on a nationwide tour starting from his home state of Uttar Pradesh to garner support for the election, left for Delhi in the evening.
