Move to merge state tourism entities receive mixed response

DEHRADUN: The tourism department’s move to merge its various wings to streamline work is being met with mixed reactions. Even in other states they have single tourism body which work in unison for the same objective. GMVN and KMVN run the guest houses which are owned by UTDB. Most of these rest houses are running into losses for their locations.Dhirender Kumar, manager of Ganga resorts at Rishikesh, one of the few profit-making rest houses of GMVN said, “Tourists get confused with these different organizational structures in tourism departments. The move will boost Uttarakhand tourism.”Secretary of GMVN-KMVN employees association, SP Pant, welcoming the initiative said, the internal issues will be taken care of by senior officials of all the three wings and no one will suffer.

With some employees expressing fears that their seniority will get affected, most are happy that duplicity of work will be avoided.Since a decade, the tourism department is planning to merge the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN), the Kumon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) and the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB).Many employees of UTDB have expressed fears that their seniority and promotions will get affected when they become part of a larger workforce.Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj has, however, said that he will press for the merger.GMVN general manager DL Rana said, “The Garhwal and Kumon corporations, which are facing losses will benefit from the merger.”At present there is a lot of confusion and conflict with regard to function allocated to each entity.
