Bristling from defeat, ABVP members rough up Haridwar MLA

On the complaint of the MLA, a case was registered against the ABVP leaders.Gurukul Kangri has been a traditional stronghold of the ABVP. “Yatishwaranand supported the independent candidate with money and muscle power even though during his meetings with us, he had promised to support the ABVP candidate. The students accused Yatishwaranand of ‘sabotaging the elections and working against their candidate.’ They also burnt an effigy of the MLA. “Additional police force has also been deployed at the ashram at the request of the MLA,” she added.

HARIDWAR: Irked over their defeat in the student union elections of the Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, leaders of the local unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) which has affiliations with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Saturday protested outside the ashram of BJP MLA from Haridwar (rural) Swami Yatishwaranand and manhandled him. The students accused Yatishwaranand of ‘sabotaging the elections and working against their candidate.’ They also burnt an effigy of the MLA. The situation got violent when a fight broke out between the students and the supporters of the MLA and police had to be called in to intervene. On the complaint of the MLA, a case was registered against the ABVP leaders.Gurukul Kangri has been a traditional stronghold of the ABVP. Student union election were held in the university on Friday in which independent candidate Vikram Bhullar, supported by the Congress-affiliated National Students Union of India won by a huge margin. What is more, he also pressurised university officials and teachers to support Bhullar. Therefore, the anger of the students was justified,” said Mohit Chauhan, ABVP leader and former president of Gurukul Kangri Students Union.Meanwhile, the MLA who is also a former student leader of the university denied that he had any role to play in the elections. “Why should I interfere in the student body elections? I think this is a pre-planned conspiracy to defame me. I am going to write to senior party leaders to initiate an enquiry in the matter,” he told TOI.Mamta Vohra, SP city, Haridwar said that a case under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) have been registered against ABVP leaders. “Additional police force has also been deployed at the ashram at the request of the MLA,” she added.
