more-in The police on Wednesday claimed to have busted an inter-State gang of robbers who had shot at three youth in Nizamuddin during a robbery attempt a few days back. “We have arrested Monu and Abhishek, and detained a juvenile in a case of attempt to murder. We have seized three countrymade pistols, four live cartridges, a push-button knife and two stolen motorcycles from the accused. They are involved in eight cases of attempt to murder and robbery,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal. Mr. Biswal said the police control room received a call around 1.30 a.m. on Monday regarding a quarrel and shoot-out near Lodhi Flyover. A police team went to the spot and discovered that three persons, who are residents of Nizamuddin, had already been shifted to AIIMS Trauma Centre with gunshot injuries. Five empty cartridges were seized by the police. “We received a tip-off that the accused involved in the shoot-out will steal a motorcycle in Lajpat Nagar. A trap was laid near Lodi Flyover. Around 2 a.m., the officers flagged down a motorcycle. However, the riders turned towards Lala Lajpat Rai Marg and fled,” said Mr. Biswal. The accused were chased and waylaid by Sub-Inspector Bharat Singh, following which they fell. One of the accused, a pillion rider, opened fire at the police. Taking advantage of the distraction, two of the three accused vaulted over a railing and fled. One of the robbers, later identified as Monu, was arrested. Monu was interrogated, which led to detention of two others. “The accused had come to Lodi Flyover for a robbery but got into an altercation with three persons sitting on the pavement. Sensing trouble, they shot all three. The condition of the trio is serious,” added Mr. Biswal.
