According to police, the arrested criminal has been identified as Tauseef (32), a resident of Bulandshahr. The police received a tip-off at 10:45 pm that he and his associate were coming to the Som Bazaar area to execute a robbery. "We had deployed teams to check all vehicles coming to the area. Around 12:15 am, we spotted two suspects travelling on a motorcycle and signalled them to stop. Instead of stopping, they tried to flee away from the NH-24 route and opened fire on the police patrolling party. While the duo was trying to flee, they hit a sand mound and fell off their motorcycle. The police then fired retaliatory shots in which one of the criminals got a bullet injury, while the other somehow managed to flee" said Akash Tomar, Superintendent of Police (city), Ghaziabad. The police said Tauseef was first booked for an attempt to murder case in 2009 for which he was convicted for 10 years, but was granted bail by the high court after a few months of imprisonment. Since then, he is involved in several loots and other heinous crimes. In 2017, the Aurariya police had declared a reward of Rs 25, 000 on his arrest. The police have registered several cases under various sections of the Indian Penal Code in Gautam Budh Nagar, Bulandshahr and Ghaziabad districts among others.
