more-in Doctors here have successfully removed 856 stones from the kidney of a 45-year-old patient using minimally invasive procedures that cause less pain and loss of blood. The surgery lasted over two hours and Munesh Kumar Gupta was discharged the next day. All stones were removed from the left kidney and urinary tract/ pelvis in one go with a single 1 cm puncture, a doctor said. The surgery was conducted at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh. Besides blood in urine, the patient showed no other symptoms related to kidney stones. Two large stones An ultrasound showed two large stones, approximately 33 mm each, in his kidney. “The doctors were astonished to find 856 stones in his left kidney and urinary tract during surgery. Further evaluation revealed swelling in the left kidney and compromised kidney function,” said Rajinder Yadav, Director, Department of Urology and Kidney, and Transplant. A temporary stent was put inside the left ureter after removal of stones to circumvent ureteral obstruction. The doctors planned a second-stage surgery for Mr. Gupta to correct the obstruction with another minimally invasive procedure — laser endopyelotomy. Dr. Yadav said the patient had a history of stones in the left kidney and was first operated in 2007. There were no visible symptoms of kidney stones this time save for passing of blood in urine two days before the surgery. Mahipal Singh Bhanot, facility director, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, said, “We have dealt with over 6,000 cases of kidney removal using minimally invasive techniques.” He said this case was challenging given the large number of stones. The kidneys act as a purification system for the blood. These stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys, which makes the urine concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallise and stick together. “Drinking plenty of fluids reduces the risk of stones. Common symptoms of kidney stones include persistent ache in the lower back, pain in the groin, acute pain in the back or side of the abdomen, pain during urination, blood in urine, persistent need to urinate and pain that comes in waves and fluctuates in intensity,” the release stated.
