With this new infrastructure, the civic body hopes to tackle its waste problem. After making the slopes of the landfill’s steep mound gradual, a mesh of interconnected pipes will be put to tap gas.“The entire mound will be covered with plastic sheets so that rainwater doesn’t seep inside the garbage accelerating methane gas formation. The entire structure will be like a balloon insulated from outside. A soil layer of 40-50cm will be put on top to cover the structure with grass and shrubs,” Virmani said.Separate lines for leachate collection are being laid to ensure the groundwater doesn’t get polluted. “The lines in place are inadequate for the quantum of leachate being generated,” an official said. The guidelines of Gauria (Mumbai) landfill reclamation project will be followed in this project.
