Dead donor’s kidneys save two lives

The Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC) has successfully donated the kidneys of a brain dead patient to save the lives of two people, one admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and the other at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The organs were retrieved with the help of the Organ Donation Network Team, Delhi government. As a healthcare provider, one of our priorities is to engage more people for organ donation. Lack of awareness“Lack of proper education and awareness are key reasons behind low organ donation rate in India. It will be our continued focus to spread more awareness on organ donation,” said Dr. H. S. Chhabra, medical director of the ISIC.

A statement released by the Centre on Monday said: “At the outset, we pay our condolences and heartfelt gratitude to the donor’s relatives. As a healthcare provider, one of our priorities is to engage more people for organ donation. Over two lakh people in India await kidney transplant. Today, the large heartedness of one of our patients’ family has saved two lives. This is the first organ donation managed by the ISIC.” Dr. A. K. Sahani, head of department of neurology at the ISIC, said: “Two kidneys were harvested from the donor, and one each was transplanted in recipients, at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and at AIIMS- Delhi.” The hospital said that it is the duty of every responsible citizen of India to encourage more people to get registered as organ donors.
