NHRC notice to top cop over suicide

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday issued a notice to the Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik over the alleged suicide by a girl inside a police post in Tilak Vihar on Sunday. Human rights violationTaking suo motu cognisance of media reports, the NHRC observed that if true, the news reports pointed towards human rights violation and gross negligence by the police personnel present. According to reports, the 17-year-old girl had been at the centre of a dispute between her family and their neighbours. It also asked the commissioner to explain why there was no woman police personnel present.

According to reports, the 17-year-old girl had been at the centre of a dispute between her family and their neighbours. As the police were planning to send her to a women’s shelter as she had told them she did not want to return home, the girl allegedly hanged herself in one of the room’s of the police post. When her family found out what had happened, the police personnel panicked and hid.
