NEW DELHI: East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) sealed 37 properties in Vishwas Nagar on Thursday for allegedly misusing residential properties to run commercial establishments.The Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee had directed the corporation on August 3 to conduct a survey in the area and issue sealing notices to the commercial establishments. In the past week, we have recovered Rs 1.76 crore from the owners as property tax against misuse of residential properties," said B N Mishra, deputy commissioner, Shahdara south zone. "We had issued 2,000 notices to these commercial establishments - polluting factories, godowns etc - as per DMC Act. "We have recovered Rs 76 lakh from 48 owners, who were asked to pay the penalty. EDMC had issued 2,000 notices in a single colony last year.

EDMC had issued 2,000 notices in a single colony last year. "We have recovered Rs 76 lakh from 48 owners, who were asked to pay the penalty. In the past week, we have recovered Rs 1.76 crore from the owners as property tax against misuse of residential properties," said B N Mishra, deputy commissioner, Shahdara south zone. EDMC will get at least Rs 20 crore from this area alone as property tax arrears, he added.Mishra claimed that these were polluting industries and the sealing drive would continue on Friday. "We had issued 2,000 notices to these commercial establishments - polluting factories, godowns etc - as per DMC Act. The owners had 48 hours to vacate the premises and shift the material." The monitoring committee, on August 3, visited Vishwas Nagar, Ashok Market and Subhash Road alongwith officials of Shahdara south zone and found that many residential premises are being used in contravention of land use norms under Master Plan 2021.
